The Week Ahead: 8 November – 14 November 2010

These are some of the stories coming up in the week ahead.

G20 summit in South Korea, enlargement of the EU and Obama continues his tour of Asia.

Leaders of the 20 leading industrialized nations are meeting in Seoul, Korea on Thursday for two days to discuss global economic issues. On the agenda are how to manage currency valuations, financial reform and sustainable growth in the aftermath of the economic crisis.

The European Commission will be meeting on Tuesday to discuss the enlargement of the European Union. They will be reviewing applications by Montenegro and Albania, as well as looking into other potential members.

Those who have been following the news lately will know that US President Barack Obama is currently in India where he last week began his 10-day Asian tour. This week he will continue that tour and visit Indonesia on Tuesday, then travelling to Seoul for the G20 and finishing the week in Japan where the APEC summit will be held. There he will meet with Naota Kan, prime minister of Japan, as well as Australian prime minister Julia Gillard and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev

Also coming up this week.

The annual pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam will start on Sunday, November 14.

And lastly, former US president George W Bush will be releasing his memoirs “Decision Points”.

The Week Ahead on Livestation: 5 – 11 April

Here are some of the stories that should make the headlines  next week.

US president Barack Obama will be meeting with Russian president Dmitry Medvedev in Prague on Thursday, 8 April, to sign a strategic arms reduction treaty. The new START treaty will reduce strategic warheads by a third.

China’s and India’s foreign ministers Yang Jiechi and S. M. Krishna will be meeting in Beijing on Monday, 5 April to hold bilaterial talks on a number of themes. Among them is likely to be a discussion on making a case to give India a seat in the United Nations Security Council.

The Financial Crisis Inquriy Commission will be holding its next public hearing on Wednesday, 7 April until Friday 9 April, with members of Citigroup and Alan Greenspan.

Also in the next week:

Tim Geithner, America’s Treasury secretary will be going to India on Tuesday 6 April to meet with India’s financial minister Pranab Mukherjee, to launch a US-India Economic and Financial partnership

Sudan will start its elections on Sunday, 11 April. This is in spite of a number of parties in the region asking for the elections to be postponed and threats of election boycotts.
